A quiet time to sit and think

... and ponder what is going on with this jacket.

V2956. I wanted a classy and versatile cover-up for my favorite t-shirt/jeans combo. I could never find a knit I liked enough to do any of the cute sweater patterns that were around this season, and I found this Vogue jacket/pants pattern during my Black Friday frenzy. I am a sucker for back details.

I am only in the beginning stages of construction even though I've been working on it every day for a week . The side seams are open, the inner back facing is not attached and the front folded facings are not pressed. I've been afraid to press it all in place because I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to have to rip out something major and re-do it all. The sleeves are in 2 pieces, I'm anxious to see how they turn out. I would be soooo much further along if the pattern markings would stop disappearing!!! No matter what I use to mark, as soon as I re-focus my eyes, they are gone- blended into the fabric. I'm seriously considering the Sharpie.

I'm not feeling too good about some things...

collar

It is cut on the bias, but it's getting some weird crinklage in the back there. Perhaps I should re-cut it?

back

I'm not loving the apparent bubbling along the seam connecting the pleats to the upper back.

These are two of the button candidates.

And New Year's is great and all, but I'm looking forward to Valentine's Day :) My next project will be just the thing for it :)
Keep warm ;)

I like the big black buttons...but that's just my opinion! :)

I like the black buttons too. And I know you're thinking about maybe ripping things out, but before you do . . . get out the iron and press everything you've sewn and see if it solves the wrinkles, ripples and all other bads.

There's more ironing in sewing than there is sewing. I still try to avoid it sometimes and I always regret it.

I'm liking the jacket so far.

I think you need to bite the bullet and give it a good pressing, it really will make a huge difference to how you look at this jacket. I vote for the big black buttons too!

I like the black buttons! Agreed that you should give it a go with the iron. As to the collar, if you didn't use a heavy interfacing (and are still dissatisfied after pressing), I'd try a beefier interfacing before recutting. The fabric looks a little delicate and bias is always unstable so a good strong interfacing could go far to stabilising it.

I vote black buttons.

E, this jacket is FABULOUS. I think that you're just seeing its faults because you're the one who is sewing it. The jacket is SO STYLISH.

I bought some light blue/green gaberdine a few weeks back, thinking I would make a jacket. Now I can't find a pattern that I love :( Your jacket pattern is adorable, however. Maybe I will copy cat you.
